On p. 55 of Grady McWhiney & Perry D. Jamieson's
Attack and Die: Civil War Military Tactics and the Southern Heritage (Tuscaloosa: University of Alabama Press, 1982), text sentence reads:
Casey also gave the division column, a small column of two companies, more emphasis than Hardee did.
To which footnote 32 is attached. Omitting citations (which are helpful, of course), the text of the footnote incisively unpacks the deeper meaning of the sentence:
Hardee used the division column formation but gave it less emphasis than Casey.
I propose a footnote to the footnote, to help clarify, just in case.
Hardee and Casey placed different emphases on the division column formation, but both used it.
